Culture
“Culture is the fountain of our progress and creativity and must be carefully nurtured to grow and develop.” ― World Commission on Culture and Development
Culture is commonly described as a collection of norms, moral and religious believes, traditions, and patterns of behaviours in human societies. It is acquired through the processes of education and socialisation, and is expressed through language, art, literature, music, dance, theatre, as well as architecture, dress codes, and etiquettes. Given the different circumstances and environments in which societies arise, it is no surprise that there is a huge diversity between peoples and tribes throughout the world. Yet, the homogenisation over the past 500 years has led to a sort of monoculture in the sense of ethnocentrism. Monocultures are not a good basis for resilience, as we know already from monoculture forests and crop growing.
Discoveries in South Africa (Blombos Cave, Border Cave) date tool making and creativity as far back as 70,000 BCE or 44,000 BCE respectively, showing that culture is an inherent aspect of our being. The cull of the arts and literature in education recently is alarming, but not unexpected in the world we live in, where we are supposed to behave and are treated like machines, in a dominator culture.
There is of course another way. In many indigenous cultures the emphasis is on relations. It is based on the knowledge that everyone is connected to everybody else, to the objects around, to the environment, and to the land, which is sacred. The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth, every decision needs to consider future generations, “we do not inherit the land from our fathers, we borrow it from our children” [this quote has been traced back to Wendell Berry’s book “The Unforeseen Wilderness: An Essay on Kentucky’s Red River Gorge”, but whether it is the original quote is unknown]. This is Interbeing as Thich Nhat Hanh coined it.
Language
Language is in many ways a crucial topic. It is not only a way to exchange ideas, feelings and experiences, but it also shapes and is shaped by the culture in which it evolves. It is that in which we swim. It can also be and is used to manipulate and dominate.
The dominator culture [coined by Riane Eisler in her book “The Chalice And The Blade”] always tries to erase and suppress other cultures and its peoples by suppressing their language, the very expression of their being and identity. It is heartbreaking to see how many languages and with it cultures are lost. It is another big loss of diversity in this world, and it seems they all go hand in hand. The same is true for the lost words of nature as Robert Macfarlane so beautifully points out in his book “The Lost Words”.
Language also shapes cultures and communities. The way we talk to and about each other, and about things that matter – and who decides what matters – has a huge impact on our lives. Being aware of the words we use with our children and each other, and choosing to be kind and non-violent would be a big step forward in our daily lives. The language we use proliferates a certain thinking and culture, mainly one of war and struggle. We fight everything, even in medicine. For example, I wonder if “fighting” cancer is the right approach mentally, or if that mentality is not the one originating it in the first place. Everything is related.
It is very uneasy to hear even the change agents talking in aggressive and violent terms, e. g. fight climate change. As this famous quote by Einstein says “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” The underlying thinking and its language needs an overhaul.

Literature
Literature shapes our world, but is also shaped by our world. No wonder censorship exists. This part is not about novels and fiction, but about books on topics related to climate change, sustainability, and systems change, as well as about experiences and the stories we tell and live by. Changing the narrative is not an easy task as it is so ingrained in everything.

Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur.
Hi omnes lingua, institutis, legibus inter se differunt. Gallos ab Aquitanis Garumna flumen, a Belgis Matrona et Sequana dividit. Horum omnium fortissimi

There are many organisations and companies putting out educational material and webinars, or trying to engage in dialogue, here are a few of them. Once you start looking, there are so many more, and it seems the amount of material is growing by the day. We cannot really say we did not know what was happening. It is not all doom and gloom though. Many are very inspiring.
